Eshoo Hails Historic Passage of Armenian Genocide Resolution

October 30th, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA), the only Armenian-Assyrian Member of Congress, led the bipartisan effort to bring H.Res. 296 to the floor of the House to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide. The resolution passed on a bipartisan vote of 405 to 11.

“Between 1915 and 1923, 1.5 million Armenians, and hundreds of thousands of Assyrians, Greeks, Syriacs, Arameans, Maronites, and other Christians were systematically slaughtered at the hands of the Ottoman Empire,” Rep. Eshoo said. “There is an historic parallel today as Turkey is once again engaging in ethnic cleansing, this time against the Kurds in Syria. This resolution not only honors and commemorates my ancestors and all those who perished in the first genocide of the 20th century, but serves as a timely reminder that we must remain vigilant to prevent similar atrocities today.”

H.Res. 296 commemorates the Armenian Genocide through official recognition and remembrance by the House of Representatives; rejects efforts to deny the existence of the genocide; and encourages education and public understanding of the genocide and efforts made by the U.S. to provide humanitarian relief.

Rep. Eshoo championed H.Res. 296, advocating to the Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Chairman of the Rules Committee. Rep. Eshoo has cosponsored the Armenian Genocide Resolution in every Congress she’s served in since 1993. To watch her full floor speech, click HERE.
