Veterans Day 2019 Newsletter

November 11th, 2019

Dear Friends,

On Veterans Day we remember with unending gratitude those who have worn the uniform to defend our country and Constitution. Because of their immense sacrifices, we enjoy liberty and freedom. As a Member of Congress, I strive every day to honor their commitment to the United States by ensuring the health and well-being of the more than 25,000 veterans in our Congressional District and the more than 19 million veterans across our country.

I’m proud to have voted for the 24 bipartisan bills the House passed this year to strengthen care for our veterans. It’s our collective responsibility to ensure that every American who wears a uniform to defend our country will have the services, opportunities, and care they’ve earned. Our legislation addresses the full spectrum of the needs of veterans: veteran suicide prevention; military to civilian transition assistance; resources to end veteran homelessness; increasing VA accessibility; and improved health care for veterans. I’m also very proud to have helped launch the Women Veterans Task Force to ensure that the more than 2 million women veterans have the access to health care, benefits, and resources they’ve earned.

This year, I’m especially proud to have made strides to secure housing for veterans and their families. I cosponsored and passed the Homeless Veterans Families Act, legislation to increase funding to help homeless veterans with children have a safe place to live, and I was thrilled to dedicate the opening of the second Fisher House at the Palo Alto VA. The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s military by providing “homes away from home” built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. I’ve fought for funding for a second Fisher House for over a decade, and I’m pleased the families of veterans are now benefiting from the new house that provides lodging for an additional 20 families of veterans and military at no cost, allowing them to be close to their loved ones as they receive treatment at the Palo Alto VA. The Fisher Houses are beautiful in every way and are a comfort to our veterans’ families during incredibly stressful periods. Service members and their families will save more than $3.387 million a year because of the Palo Alto VA Fisher Houses.

We owe so much to our service members and veterans, and I hope you’ll take a moment today to bow your head and quietly give thanks to our great patriots for their service and love of country.

Warm regards,

Anna G. Eshoo
