Catherine Shinners of Palo Alto recently responded to a request I made of my constituents to share their stories of enrolling for health insurance using Covered California. Catherine wrote, "On January 1, 2014, I'm going to celebrate being able to access health care services with decent health insurance for the first time in three years." Her story is not unique.

Today, I voted for and the House passed a bipartisan budget bill which will fund the government through September 30, 2015, lifting some of the harmful sequester cuts and importantly, avoiding another government shutdown. The deepest flaw in the bill is that it does not extend benefits for the long-term unemployed. This is harsh and harmful.

We've all heard the news coverage about the troubled rollout of the federal website of the new health law. There have been just as many untold success stories: People getting health coverage for the very first time; lower premiums for those with pre-existing conditions; and the freedom to change jobs without being tied to a single health plan.
