Catherine Shinners of Palo Alto recently responded to a request I made of my constituents to share their stories of enrolling for health insurance using Covered California. Catherine wrote, "On January 1, 2014, I'm going to celebrate being able to access health care services with decent health insurance for the first time in three years." Her story is not unique.

No one who lives on the Peninsula and in the Santa Clara Valley can question the importance of open spaces and gorgeous landscapes to our quality of life, the water we drink, the air we breathe and our very identity. Preserving these treasured areas is synonymous with life itself.

Today, I voted for and the House passed a bipartisan budget bill which will fund the government through September 30, 2015, lifting some of the harmful sequester cuts and importantly, avoiding another government shutdown. The deepest flaw in the bill is that it does not extend benefits for the long-term unemployed. This is harsh and harmful.

Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), senior Member of the Judiciary Committee, introduced the Video CHOICE (Consumers Have Options in Choosing Entertainment) Act to eliminate broadcast television blackouts and give consumers greater flexibility to choose the channels they receive each month from their cable, satellite or other pay-TV provider.
