Rep. Eshoo Re-elected Democratic Leader of Health Subcommittee

January 27, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16) released the following statement after Democratic members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to re-elect her Ranking Member of the Health Subcommittee:

"I'm honored that my Democratic colleagues have once again entrusted me to lead the Health Subcommittee. In the 118th Congress, the Subcommittee will be responsible for passing essential public health legislation to protect our nation's biosecurity, provide low-cost community health care, improve pediatric and maternal health, support vital medical research, and strengthen Medicare and Medicaid. In order to achieve this essential work, our Subcommittee must be united, diligent, and focused on patients, not politics. I look forward to working with Chairman Brett Guthrie and the members of the Subcommittee to fulfill these important responsibilities."

Rep. Eshoo was elected to the Energy and Commerce Committee in 1995, and has served on the Health Subcommittee for 20 of her 28 years on the Committee. Of the more than 50 bills and provisions she has authored that have been signed into law by five presidents, more than half have been health related.

The Energy and Commerce Committee is the oldest continuous standing committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was originally established in 1795 to regulate interstate and foreign commerce. Today, the Committee has the broadest jurisdiction of any authorizing committee in Congress.
