Rep. Eshoo Demands Facebook Remove Doctored Video of Speaker Pelosi

August 4, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, demanding the company take down a doctored video of Speaker Nancy Pelosi that other social media platforms have removed.

"I am extremely troubled that Facebook is once again refusing to remove a doctored video of Speaker Pelosi that makes her seem inebriated," Rep. Eshoo said in the letter. "The video is disinformation, and by leaving it up, Facebook is actively playing a role in disseminating political disinformation."

Background

Press reports indicate that Facebook labeled a doctored video of Speaker Nancy Pelosi as "partly false" on Sunday. The video has circulated on Facebook since Thursday and has reportedly been viewed over two million times. Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok removed the video. In May 2019, Facebook refused to remove a similarly falsified video of Speaker Pelosi.
