Health Chairwoman Eshoo Applauds Pfizer’s Vaccine Progress

November 9, 2020

PALO ALTO, CA – House Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) released the following statement today after Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their interim analysis show their vaccine candidate is more than 90 percent effective at preventing COVID-19:

"As the U.S. surpassed the somber milestone of 10 million total COVID-19 cases today, the world welcomed the good news that the vaccine candidate created by Pfizer and BioNTech showed extraordinary efficacy in preventing infection with no observed serious safety concerns in its first interim analysis. These promising initial results are a testament to the dedicated scientists who've worked around the clock on this vaccine candidate since the virus first appeared. Pfizer and BioNTech will now need to take the important next steps of collecting two months of safety data before applying for an Emergency Use Authorization. The application will then be reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration and an external panel of independent experts at a public meeting."
