Eshoo Statement on SCOTUS Ruling in ACA Contraceptive Coverage Case

Press Release

PALO ALTO, CA – Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Little Sisters of the Poor v. Pennsylvania, to uphold the Trump Administration’s rule that employers can deny contraception coverage to their workers on religious or moral grounds:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling on birth control is an assault on reproductive rights and access to health care for women. Birth control is essential to women’s health, equality and economic security, and as many as 126,400 women will immediately lose access to cost-free contraception when their employers opt out of the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate because of this ruling.

“During a global pandemic and economic downturn, the impact of this ruling will be even more devastating as women are forced to choose between paying for their health care and paying for rent, groceries, or childcare.

“While the Trump Administration continues to go to extreme lengths to control women and their reproductive health, I will continue the fight for women’s access to health care.
