Eshoo Statement on Reported Draft Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

May 3, 2022

PALO ALTO, CA – Today Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) released the following statement after media reports of a draft Supreme Court decision overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling:

"If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised for the first time in our history to eviscerate a constitutional right by overturning Roe v. Wade. Twenty-six states could quickly move to ban abortion and 36 million women — nearly half of the women of reproductive age in the United States —could lose abortion access.

"I'm proud to have voted to codify Roe by voting for the Women's Health Protection Act to ensure that every woman has equal access to comprehensive reproductive health care, regardless of what state she lives in. The need for this legislation has never been more urgent, and the Senate must act immediately to preserve women's rights over their own bodies. Reproductive choice is personal, private, and serious. We should trust women to make the best decisions."
