Eshoo Statement on the 85th Anniversary of Social Security

August 14, 2020

PALO ALTO, CA – Representative Anna G. Eshoo released the following statement today celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Social Security Act, which was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935:

"Today we celebrate the 85th birthday of Social Security, the single most successful social insurance program in the history of our country. Social Security provides an unbroken promise of financial security to tens of millions of Americans, including over 100,000 in my Congressional District. For seniors, there is a monthly check. Widows, children and the disabled are kept out of poverty, and America is kept whole.

"More than 90% of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents agree that Social Security is an important program according to a survey released by AARP. Yet President Trump wants to break the promise made to every working American by abolishing the payroll tax that funds Social Security which will seriously jeopardize the program's future.

"We need to protect Social Security for generations to come, not dismantle it. I'm a cosponsor of the Social Security 2100 Act to guarantee the long-term solvency of Social Security through the end of this century. Congress must come together to pass this bill and ensure that every American can retire with the dignity and security they deserve."
