Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Anna G. Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, released the following statement following House passage of H.R. 1385, legislation to reauthorize the Breast Cancer Research Stamp for two more years:

"I'm proud the House has seen fit to reauthorize the Breast Cancer Research Stamp. This is a key weapon in the fight to cure a disease that currently affects an estimated two million American women. To date, over 450 million of the stamps have been sold, raising $35 million for breast cancer research."

Breast cancer is still the number one cancer killer of women between the ages of 15 and 54. In the United States alone, the disease claims a woman's life every 15 minutes.

The Breast Cancer Research Stamp was first introduced in July 1998. Profits from the sale of the stamp have been divided between the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Department's Health Research Division.

Eshoo has long been a champion of increased research for breast cancer. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act, which she introduced in the 106th Congress, is now law. The Act gives states the resources to provide Medicaid coverage for treatment to low-income uninsured and underinsured women who have been diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer.
