Eshoo Announces $10.5 Million in Emergency Housing Funding for California’s 18th Congressional District

April 3, 2020

PALO ALTO, CA – Today, Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded over $10.5 million in grant funding to cities and counties in California's 18th Congressional District in response to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The grant funding was authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"Californians facing homelessness and housing insecurity are particularly vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic," Congresswoman Eshoo said. "My Congressional District remains a hotspot and in order to slow the spread of the disease and comply with shelter in place orders, individuals need shelter. This critical funding will help local governments provide shelter to the homeless, preserve and renovate affordable housing, and provide resources to the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless."

Communities in California's 18th Congressional District receiving grants include: San Jose ($8.15 million), Santa Clara County ($906,287), Redwood City ($448,039), the City of Santa Cruz ($353,464), Mountain View ($348,702), and Palo Alto ($294,909). The grant funding was authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act through the Community Development Block Grants (CBDG), Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG), and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) programs.

On March 27th the House of Representatives passed the CARES Act, a historic $2 trillion relief package to get financial help to families and workers, stabilize our cascading economy, and help the American people and our nation's health care workers confront the COVID-19 pandemic head on. The law includes over $9 billion to address homelessness and affordable housing.
