Eshoo Advocates on House Floor to Cap Out-of-Pocket Costs for Insulin

March 31, 2022

Congresswoman firmly condemned Republican attacks on affordable medicine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Anna G.Eshoo (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Health Subcommittee, gave an impassioned speech on the House floor combatting Republican attacks on affordable insulin and urging her colleagues to vote for legislation to cap the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35 per month. Shortly after the speech, the legislation passed the House by a vote of 232-193. A downloadable video of the speech can be found here and the written speech is below:

I rise in full support of this legislation, and I've seen it here on the floor listening to our Republican friends, price controls, socialists, killing innovation.

I'm not going to use all of my time using their language.

How about this? Diabetes kills. Diabetics need insulin. They have to be able to afford it.

They've paid their taxes, all of their lives, hardworking people.

So the cost for this? Sign me up for it. Sign me up for it to help people, to invest in our own people.

This is absurd -- these prices in our country -- when it costs $15 to manufacture.

So, today we stand with your constituents as well as ours to lower the price of insulin for those that need it so that they can go on with their lives. I yield back.
