Rep Anna Eshoo

Palo Alto Daily News/Mercury News - Officials break ground on Defenders Lodge at VA Palo Alto Health Care System

September 17, 2011

Rep. Eshoo recently attended the groundbreaking for the new Defenders Lodget at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System campus with Rep. Mike Honda and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki. Eshoo spoke with Jason Green of the Mercury News. Here is an excerpt from the story:

When it is completed in 2013, the 34,000-square-foot Defenders Lodge will boast 54 suites and 108 queen-size beds, replacing the VA Palo Alto Health Care System's antiquated and frequently overbooked 49-bed Hometel, VA spokeswoman Kerri Childress said. It will stand next to the Fisher House, an extended-stay housing facility for families of veterans receiving care at the VA.

"It will be nothing short of a five-star hotel," she said of the lodge.

For U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, the Defenders Lodge represents the last link in a chain of care for veterans, as well as a symbol of gratitude for their service.

"This is the final piece ... of the integrated care of our veterans and wounded soldiers," Eshoo said. "And they deserve it. This says we care about you."
