Weekly Update From Rep. Anna G. Eshoo

A STATEMENT FROM ANNA REGARDING THE SHOOTING AT GOP CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL PRACTICE

"On Wednesday, June 14th a horrific attack was directed at my GOP colleagues by a lone gunman during their baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia. We continue to pray for Congressman Steve Scalise and all those who were injured by this senseless and cowardly act. I especially want to commend the Capitol Police officers who risk their lives every day to protect us. Their bravery and heroic actions prevented a massacre on the field.

"Speaker Ryan said that ‘an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.' In the aftermath of this tragedy that has shaken everyone, may we resolve our differences in a civil and respectful way."

The Annual Congressional Baseball Game has taken place for decades, with a Republican team and a Democratic team. All proceeds from the game are directed to local charities in the Washington, D.C. area. The game was played on Thursday evening at Nationals Park with the Democrats claiming a victory with a score of 11-2.

HERE'S WHAT CONGRESS DID THIS WEEK

Voted on H.R. 627, The Streamlining Energy Efficiency for Schools Act

VOTED: YES

This legislation passed unanimously in the House. It will help schools better navigate available federal programs and financing options for efficiency upgrades. These programs are currently spread across the government and schools are often unaware of the resources available.

An estimated 14 million American children attend public school in a deteriorating building.  Many of the problems with the schools involve the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems. According to a Department of Education survey, 43 percent of schools indicated that the poor condition of their facilities interferes with the delivery of instruction. By upgrading these systems, energy efficiency is increased, learning environments are improved, and scarce funds are conserved.e

LEGISLATION ANNA CO-SPONSORED THIS WEEK

H.R. 2248, to prohibit new oil and gas drilling in U.S. waters

This legislation prohibits the Trump Administration from revising the five-year oil and gas leasing program that was approved under the Obama Administration. After an extensive public process, the Obama Administration concluded that it is not in the public interest to expand offshore drilling in U.S. waters in the Arctic, Atlantic, or Pacific Oceans. Last month, President Trump issued an Executive Order directing the Secretary of Interior to revise this leasing plan to allow for more offshore drilling, potentially in all three oceans.

LETTERS ANNA COSIGNED THIS WEEK

Letter to Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee on drug pricing

This letter calls on the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee to hold public hearings to examine the rising costs of prescription drugs and work in a bipartisan measure to address this critical issue. In 2015, growth in prescription drug spending outpaced all other health care services. Congress should examine this issue and work to address it. The letter was signed by all 24 Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

It was a pleasure to welcome the Citizens Climate Lobby team back to Washington and meet with them in my D.C. office. They are an exceptional group that is pursuing bipartisan solutions to reverse the effects of climate change through their carbon fee and dividend proposal, including the establishment of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus.

On June 11th I joined thousands of constituents in San Jose to commemorate LGBTQ communities across the country during Pride Month. We also paused to remember the 49 individuals who were gunned down in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub shooting one year ago this week. We hold their memories in our hearts as we continue our relentless fight for equality for everyone in our country.
