About the 16th District

Welcome to the beautiful 16th Congressional District of California. The 16th District is located in the South Bay, Mid-Peninsula, and coastal San Mateo County. A list of cities and communities located in our District is below.

The 16th Congressional District is home to several major government agencies, including the NASA Ames Research Center, the 129th Rescue Wing of the California National Guard, the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Western Regional Office, and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, operated by Stanford University for the Department of Energy.

The 16th District is the birthplace of Silicon Valley, world center of the information technology and biotechnology industries. It was here in 1939 in a Palo Alto garage that William Hewlett and David Packard started their firm and sixty-one years later, Larry Page and Sergey Brin met here at Stanford University and went on to found Google nearby. The electronics and technology industries continue to flourish, and leaders such as LinkedIn, Netflix, HP, Google, Intuit, VMWare, and a host of other leading firms are headquartered in the 16th District.

Our District is one of the most diverse, dynamic, and distinguished districts in the country. If you are interested in browsing district-specific population statistics, you can look up Census data for the 16th District.
