Eshoo: An Open Letter to My Constituents on President Trump
February 10th, 2017
To all my constituents,
Thank you for writing to me to express your concerns about President Trump. I appreciate the time you took to express your thoughts and views, all of which I welcome. Many, many constituents have contacted me to share their hopes, fears, differences, and dismay.
In his farewell address to the country, President Obama said “we must guard against the weakening of our values because this is who we are.” President Trump to date ignores facts, continues to be divisive, and seems to be unhinged. His rejection of science and his setting of U.S. policy with 140 characters via Twitter, are appalling and dangerous.
What I pledge to do is fight with every fiber of my being to protect our nation’s great values by first and foremost protecting and defending our Constitution. We must advance facts because truth is not fungible. Whether it is protecting our national security, investigating the role the Russian government played in our national election, protecting our environment, advancing voting rights, standing up for refugees, and protecting healthcare, to name just a few critical issues… I will do my utmost to push back and bring your values and your voice to the debates. None of this will be easy because there is one party in charge of the Executive Branch and both chambers of Congress.
Abraham Lincoln said “public sentiment is everything.” My hope lies with my constituents, their sentiments and advocacy for our democracy, together with people across our country. I draw my strength from you and hopefully, vice-versa.
