Five years ago, Congress passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act which cut Federal subsidized Stafford student loan interest rates in half—from 6.8 percent to a manageable 3.4 percent—to help working and middle class families deal with the soaring cost of higher education. However, unless Congress acts by July 1, 2012, that relief will expire and student loan interest rates will skyrocket back to 6.8 percent. With millions of American families struggling to recover from the recession, and hard-working Americans holding more student loan debt than credit card debt, we cannot afford to double the interest rates Americans are paying on nearly $1 trillion in debt. Congresswoman Eshoo is committed to fighting for an extension of this critical legislation, but she needs your help. Take a moment to express your support for legislation to extend the reduced student loan interest rate. Together we can make the point that millions of Americans are counting on Congress to keep student loan rates affordable! |
